Internships

Through this program, four students attending minority serving institutions will be given the opportunity to work directly with the PSC staff in Pittsburgh for seven weeks on a bioinformatics research project that the student is interested in with the goal having a significant start towards a Bioinformatics research publication.
Funding is provided through the National Institutes of Health Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program. Student support includes round-trip transportation, lodging, and $825/week stipend.1
The deadline for applications for 2010 summer internships is TBA.
Priority consideration will be given to applicants from partner institutions that have offered a bioinformatics course for the first-time during the current academic year.

Student Qualifications:
- The student is attending a minority serving institution and making satisfactory academic progress.
- The student is highly motivated and has a well-defined research project.
- The student has an on-campus advisor who will assist the student and help the student disseminate the results of the student's research project.
- The student has at least one year of academic work left at the institution prior to graduation. (This requirement does not apply if the student has held a previous internship at the PSC.)
Project Guidelines:
- The proposed project is in the field of bioinformatics and is a reasonable project for the student to make substantial progress on during the internship.
- The proposed project is well-defined and in an area where an appropriate mentor from the National Resource for Biomedical Supercomputing can be found.
- For projects involving model testing, the student must have secured relevant data to test the model.
- The results of the proposed project can be disseminated through appropriate means such as publication in a journal and/or a presentation/poster session at an appropriate scientific conference.
Application Requirements:
- A cover letter. The cover letter must include a paragraph describing the student’s motivation towards the project and a paragraph describing the student’s career goals and how the internship is expected to help advance those goals. The letter must also include a statement from the student to disseminate the results of the research project undertaken through appropriate means such as publication in a journal and/or a presentation/poster session at an appropriate scientific conference.
- The student’s resume or CV
- The student’s transcripts showing satisfactory academic progress.
- A short description of the proposed project that the student will pursue during the internship.
- A letter of support from the student’s advisor. This letter of support should include a commitment from the advisor to assist the student in disseminating the scientific results generated from the internship through appropriate means and should identify potential journals or scientific conferences where the students work may be disseminated.
